Thames Reach has been recognised as one of Britain’s top employers in the Sunday Times Best 100 Companies to Work For list. Ranked 74th in this survey of mid-sized UK employers, Thames Reach was the only homelessness organisation and one of merely three charities to make the top 100.
A rising number of vulnerable residents are having their homes taken over by crack gangs. Drug dealers befriend former rough sleepers or those with mental health or drug problems, and use their flats as a base for criminal activity. This 'cuckooing' recently featured on the BBC's 'Inside Out' programme.
A team of volunteers from Cable & Wireless spent a day refurbishing a Thames Reach house. Around 30 staff members from the telecommunications giant worked together to paint and decorate the lounge and office and revamp the garden of the supported housing project for former rough sleepers.
Jason doesn't earn a fortune begging on the street, but a regular £20 every couple of hours can keep his heroin and crack cocaine habit going nicely. In a campaign supported by Thames Reach, Westminster City Council is urging the public not to give money to people begging, as it may help them to buy the drugs that kill them.
A one-day conference aimed at getting homeless men and women into construction jobs will be held in May. 'Re : Building', hosted by Thames Reach in partnership with other agencies, will tackle the practical and individual obstacles that prevent homeless people getting jobs in this sector.
